About Me
I am a researcher in philosophy, currently employed as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. I am broadly interested in the philosophy of mind and of psychology; particularly issues concerning temporal experience and social cognition.
In my doctoral thesis, Experiencing (in) Time (2019), I present a phenomenological investigation of our experience of time – of things as they fall within time – and suggest that something important goes missing in recent debates. This is the notion of a point of view. I argue that articulating the sense in which we have a point of view in time, and what this is a point of view upon, is crucial to an account of how things are for an experiencing subject. From April 1st, 2019, I took up the position of postdoctoral research assistant on the interdisciplinary AHRC project 'Time: Between Metaphysics and Psychology'. You can find more information about my research on PhilPeople and, if you wish, you can reach out to me on Twitter. |
Teaching
Across 2022-3 I am delivering two philosophy honours modules and two MA modules at Edinburgh, the former two being 'Theories of Mind' and 'The Philosophy of Religion' and the latter two being 'Topics in Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science' and 'Philosophical Methods'.
I enjoy teaching a range of topics in philosophy and I am particularly proud to have been awarded a 2020-21 Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence, being nominated by my students and colleagues. I was employed as a sessional teacher, and associate tutor, at the University of Warwick, for a wide variety of modules (see below). I have especially enjoyed helping students get to grips with logic (which is, hopefully, equally rewarding for them and me); teaching introductory modules that give students their first taste of philosophy; and teaching modules related to my own research (i.e. the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of time, and so on).
My teaching at the University of Warwick has spanned the following modules:
Central Themes in Philosophy (topics covering philosophy of psychology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of action, and metaphysics, 2019-20);
Descartes & Mill (2016-17);
Elements of Scientific Method (2016-17);
History of Modern Philosophy (Locke, Berkeley, Hume, 2018-19);
Introduction to Philosophy (topics covering philosophy of mind, epistemology, aesthetics, and metaphysics, 2017-18; 2019-20; 2020-21; 2021-22);
Introduction to Symbolic Logic (2020-21; 2021-22).
Making Decisions (2020-21)
Mind & Reality (topics covering philosophy of mind, aesthetics, epistemology, and metaphysics, 2017-18 and 2018-19);
Philosophy of Mind (2020-21);
Philosophy of Time (2019-20);
Plato & Descartes (2017-18);
Reason, Argument, and Analysis (an introductory module with an emphasis on critical thinking, 2020-21; 2021-22);
Words & Things (from Frege and Russell to Kripke and Evans, 2020-21).
I have also worked in local secondary schools with the charitable organisation The Brilliant Club, delivering weekly tutorials in the philosophy of mind to groups of 11-13yr old students. This has been very rewarding and a valuable learning experience, affording me with a greater understanding of the challenges facing the UK education system.

Aside from my research, I enjoy long walks in cold places, drawing, and/or listening to and playing music.
